Birthing at home?

my cousin wants to have a home birth with just her and her husband. She is 25 and completely healthy. Her midwife said that she doesnt prefer it but it is her baby and as long as everything goes ok she can do it. The midwife said that she will have to gather supplies. What will she need for an unnassisten home water birth? anyone have any good websites with stories and possible pictures? she wants as much reference as possible! thanks angie and lily

Birthing at home?
I was also 25 when my son my born and I also had a planned unassisted homebirth and unassisted pregnancy. Everything went great!!

I didn't give birth in the water. But I did sit in the hot tub to relieve pain. And when I felt the baby crown, I got out of the water and got on the bed, in a kneeling position. I gave some pushes and the baby came out! Wow I felt euphoric and empowered for weeks, like I've been on cloud 9!

What I did when I was in labor was WALK, WALK, WALK alot in our bedroom. I also ran a hot comfortable shower down my back. I drank a lot of water and I ate some. Then my spouse ran a hot comfortable bath and I soaked in there and rested until I felt the baby was ready to come out. If you do not push, the baby will come out naturally by themself. Or you can push gently, so the baby can come out faster. Make sure to put oil in your perineum so you will not tear.

If you tear, it will heal anyway, so don't worry.

*You can also buy a birthing stool to rest when you are tired of walking. Birthing balls are great too!

After the baby was born, we put the baby on my chest. And wow, the baby was sooooo peaceful, he never gave a loud cry like other babies born in the hospital. And we waited for the placenta to be born. *Do not cut the cord when it is still pulsing. Wait to cut the cord when it turns white. Or wait till the midwife arrives so she can do it.

If I had a midwife, I would not even tell her that I would go UC. I will just have a UC birth as planned and would just call the midwife after the baby is born.

That's what I heard other people did.

For UC, I got the "Emergency Childbirth" available on amazon-------%26gt; http://www.amazon.com/Emergency-Childbir...

"Unassisted Childbirth" by Laura Shanley------%26gt; http://www.amazon.com/Emergency-Childbir...

"Unassited Homebirth"--------%26gt; http://www.amazon.com/Unassisted-Homebir...

Be sure to read this page on unassisted birth and other questions about it here------%26gt; http://unassistedchildbirth.com/uc/

*** I also have unassisted childbirth VHS video that I bought from Laura Shanely. Plus I also have another VHS video with 8 uc births! If you want them, I will be happy to send them to you, if you pay for postage. This helped me make the decision to UC.

Please email me by clicking on my nickname. If you have any other questions or if you are interested in the UC videos.
Reply:Hi, I was born at home. It was a bad idea my parents made. When I was born, I wasn't breathing. Luckily, my aunt who is a nurse was there. She had to suck fluids out from my mouth that was coming from my lungs. But I think it's so cool for the child to know they were born at home. I still love the thought!
Reply:Being a Labor and Delivery nurse, I would not suggest an unassisted home birth. She should make sure that she has a Midwife attending the birth. Also, your cousin may want to check out a birthing center (not hospital) they have all the comforts of home, and are tended to by a team (midwives, nurses, doulas etc). Good Luck!
Reply:The midwife should be able to produce some names of women that have birthed at home who can give her advise and encouragement. My cousin has birthed her last 5 at home and it has worked out well for her. She orders a complete kit, but I'm not sure from where but the midwife should know this also.
Reply:I had my second child at home and would recommend it, but I think she should have the midwife there, it is just safer, they then bring all the supplies!
Reply:I'm not too sure a water birth would be ideal if they are completely unassisted. She could stay in the tub until the baby is low in the vagina, but be on dry land ;) when the time comes just in case something happens. I would call the hospital when she goes into labor to lessen confusion in case of an emergency.

This is a sample list used by some midwives for the things parents will need to gather for a homebirth. (I don't know what differences there will be with a water birth, but being fully prepared can't hurt.)

Pint of 91% alcohol (or 99% alcohol, grain alcohol, or 180 proof Golden Grain)

Bottle of isopropyl rubbing alcohol (70%)

Cotton balls

Plastic drop cloth or plastic sheet (an old shower curtain or large plastic table cloth works wonderfully)

Plastic trash bags (AT LEAST 4 large) dark colored

2 fitted bed sheets to fit your bed

2 flat bed sheets to fit your bed (4 flat sheets is acceptable)

4 bath towels

4 wash cloths

8 receiving blankets

Large mixing type bowl

Small mixing type bowl (prefer bowls not be glass)

Working flashlight and extra batteries

Extra toilet paper (at least 2 6-roll packs)

Several kinds of juice (at least one citrus and 1 non-citrus)

One extra bag of ice

Protein you like that is easy to fix (peanut butter, cheese, or eggs for example)

Clothes for you for after the birth (gown and panties)

Clothes for the baby (2 pair socks or booties, 2 onesies, 2 sleepers)

Diapers for the baby

Large cookie sheet

Silver duct tape (preferably new roll)

Thermometer (if digital, include probe covers)

Instructions for Preparation

Linens and clothes may be old or new. All should be freshly washed and dried in a hot dryer 10 extra minutes. Bag items in brown paper bags (NOT plastic bags), tape shut, and label clearly in large letters.

Bag in this combination:

Sheets

Towels and washcloths

Receiving blankets

Baby clothes

Mother’s clothes

Please have your birth kit and other supplies purchased, prepared and ready by 3 weeks before your due date. Have everything in one place in the room you plan to give birth.

Blessings
