Is there a German Idiom for: useless embellishment?

Like: guilding the lily, or: painting feet on snakes, or: carrying coals to Newcastle, or: taking water to the river.

Is there a German Idiom for: useless embellishment?
yes, there are. squeezing orange juice out of a cow, having a crocodile watch the chicken farm, washing dishes with corn oil, planting flowers in the desert, etc.
Reply:Carrying coals to Newcastle.

If this means spending energy on something pointless and hopeless you could say

"Die Nadel im Heuhaufen suchen."

I can`t understand the other phrases.
