Discus help!!?

I’ve just bought the bulldog discus home a few days ago.

I don't know what's wrong with my bulldog discus; he seems to be bumping into things when he’s swimming. It looks as though he can’t see what’s in front of him.



Do you know what’s wrong with my discus? What can I do help him?



Additional infor:

Ph- 7.2

Ammonia %26amp; nitrite- 0ppm

Temperature- 85F

Light- On at night only

Plants- Amazon sword, banana lily and Hygrophila

Water changes- 50% on a Saturday and 10% every second day.

Tank mates- 3 discus, 4 guppies, one baby blue gouramis. (All are peaceful no bully in the tank)

Food- brine shrimp and discus food

Well your pH is a little high for discus, and you didn't mention how hard your water is. Your pH should be less than 6 and your water should be very soft.

You could also increase the temperature by a few degrees, although 85F should be adequate.

Why is your light on at night? It should be on during the day and off at night so the discus have time to rest and metabolize properly.

Cut back on the brine shrimp. They are great for treats, and baby brine shrimp is great fry food, but adult brine shrimp are not nutritious and have an indigestible shell. Try feeding them bloodworms instead.



How big is your tank?
Reply:discus fish need soft water quality and slight acidity in the water.it also looks like you have a lot of fish. i put 1 inch of fish per gallon of water.
Reply:Your fish could just be under stress. Fish use their lateral line to navagate swimming. Did you observe him in the tank at the store? (He could be partially blind) this isn't uncommon.



First of all, Temperature should be lowerd to 78 degrees. 85 is entirely too high. Do this slowly do not just drop the temp. Begin turning down your heater one degree at a time.



50% water changes are also a no no. You should only remove 20-25% of the water for changes/cleanings. Forget the 10% every second day. Is there a reason you are changing this water so much? It isn't necessary nor beneficial unless you are having a water quality problem.



Brine shrimp are fine no problems there (Sorry zoe, but brine shrimp don't have "Hard shells" and are a great source of protein for your fish at 5.4% vs blood worms at only 4.1%. Where do people come up with this stuff?) Keep an eye on him. It could be the start of a swim blatter problem.



Since it won't hurt any of your fish, toss them a few cut up peas. This will benifit all in the tank and if it is the start of swim bladder, it will help clear it up before it goes too far.
