To control the situation you can put an advertisement in your local paper: "free to a good home lily pads, own removal and transport." Or, put on your oldest clothes, grab a rake and trawl out the excess lily pads. They make brilliant compost.

To control in the future you have three options

1.) Clean out all the lily pads now so nothing is left behind and then find some less aggressive to put in your pond. It's hard most aquatic plants are really vigorous, I just clean out when I can't see the water for the plants.

2.) Mark in your gardening diary in early spring and autumn that you need to clean most of the lily pads out of your pond.

3.) Some geese and ducks eat the lily pads - inquire at your local pet store.
