How much plant root should be in the beta fish bowl from plant above?

I bought a planter with a beta fish bowl in the base. It has a nice water lily in the planter but I have not added the beta who I have called Leroy. There was no real instruction with it. If anyone has the same planter could you email me.

I'd just put the plant in a pot and leave it out of the vase all together. A vase it too small for a betta and adding the plant will only make things worse. This has got to be the cruelest fish set up ever invented.
Reply:there should be enough root in the water to allow the fish to still swim around.

*make sure there is some access to the surface of the water for the fish, since they use their labyrinth organs to stick their mouths out of the water and breath through the air. also, sometimes people think that the plant somehow feeds the betta fish. this is VERY untrue. betta fish prefer fish foods that are dehydrated worms and stuff of that nature.



Betta is pronounced Bett-uh, not Bay-tuh. it is named after an ancient siamese warrior.
Reply::( unfortunately this is a terrible home for the betta. bettas breathe air from the surface, the plant blocks the surface. bettas do not come from puddles and therefor do not appreciate small containers, they actually have their own large territories in the wild. and lastly, bettas are tropical fish that should be in water heated to 78*F to 82*F, not possible in a bowl or vase.



I would suggest not using the lily, however if you keep it trimmed it should be alright. be sure you're doing 100% water changes once a week and feeding the betta once a day.
Reply:Most plants just stick it in the gravel and your done. There is pretty much no wrong way to plant a plant into the substrate. but if your using lucky bamboo, the leaves cannot be under water or they will rot.
